The most common causes are strabismus and refractive error. Amblyopia is a developmental problem in the connection between the eye and the brain: the brain ignores the input from one eye. This leads to a rapid loss of visual acuity in the amblyopic eye if the eye remains uncorrected and unused. It also causes a loss of binocular vision, extending as far as an inability to perceive depth. Impaired vision in one or both eyes in children caused by amblyopia can be improved with electrostimulation. The treatment has proved particularly successful in children, since in childhood new nerve connections are more likely to form.
