Glaucoma

A group of progressive conditions of the visual pathway, including the visual cortex, with continuous loss of the visual field over time.

Retinitis pigmentosa

Pigmentary dystrophy of the retina — a group of inherited, progressive conditions characterised by degeneration of the light-sensitive cells.

Ischaemic optic nerve damage

Caused by reduced blood flow. It is a common sudden-onset disorder of the optic nerve.

Vision loss after brain injury

Damage to the visual pathway or the visual cortex after trauma, surgery or a stroke can put sight at risk.

Optic nerve hypoplasia

A congenital malformation consisting of small, underdeveloped optic nerves that cause impaired vision.

Amblyopia, or lazy eye

A developmental problem in the connection between eye and brain — the brain ignores the input from one eye. The most common causes are strabismus and refractive error.

Leber's hereditary optic neuropathy

An inherited condition that can lead to severe loss of central vision.

Visual disturbance and optic neuritis

Optic neuritis caused by autoimmune inflammatory processes is the most common cause of vision loss in patients with multiple sclerosis.
